Like a roller coaster.
Like things taking place here, all around, now. -Nora Aslan NORA ASLAN creates richly patterned photo-based collages that juxtapose decorative forms with images that often point to the darker side of the human condition. Working from a background in both architecture and tapestry making, she has developed a unique visual language that combines elements of photomontage and painting. The artist’s second solo exhibition at PAVEL ZOUBOK GALLERY features a series of new collages on paper and on canvas that continue her exploration into the complex relationship between popular culture and society. Theexhibition’s title, Like a Roller Coaster, is a play on words, referring metaphorically to contemporary life as a roller coaster, and to the Bob Dylan classic Like a Rolling Stone (“How does it feel - to be on your own - with no direction home - like a complete unknown - like a rolling stone?”). The works from this series explore our collective state of uncertainty, of fast living without consequences – of not thinking, just plunging forward with no goals, no sense, no plans, no thought to the future or what is on the horizon. These are some of the central preoccupations of Aslan’s sumptuously ornate collages, in which images of roller coasters culled from a wide range of popular printed sources are meticulously cut and pasted into densely layered arrangements. Using a combination of circular and rectangular formats, she draws the viewer into a series of rhythmic vortices. The confluence of Aslan’s opulent structures and the evocative imagery from which she draws continues to expand our understanding of pattern and decoration. Nora Aslan has exhibited in numerous galleries and museums across Latin America and Europe including the National Museum of Fine Arts (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes), Buenos Aires, Museum of Modern Art, Vienna, Museum of Modern Art, Sarajevo and has participated in Biennial exhibitions in Havana, Cuba, Porto Alegre, Brasil and Buenos Aires. She lives and works in Buenos Aires.
