FEBRUARY 2008

Gallery artist, JOHN DIGBY, has recently been made a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London, where he worked in the bird house for six years during his youth. The original house has been rebuilt as the new Blackburn Pavilion for Tropical Birds, where an exhibition of his bird collages for the benefit of the London Zoo will celebrate the opening on March 20, 2008.

GEORGE DEEM at the Boston Athenaeum

The exhibition “From Boston Collections,” on view October 10 to December 1, 2007, is part of the Athenaeum’s celebration of its Bicentennial. Curated by Athenaeum curator David Dearinger, the exhibition is a collection of masterworks from nineteenth- and twentieth-century American artists in private Boston collections. The exhibition includes 32 works by 28 artists , including Maurice Prendergast, Winslow Homer, Josef Albers, Neil Welliver, and Wayne Thiebaud. For more information, please visit:

GEORGE DEEM at the Menil Collection, Houston Texas

On view from September 13 to December 9, 2007, the exhibition “Lessons from Below,” organized by Menil curators Franklin Sirmans and Michelle White, consists of works selected from the Menil’s collection by the Houston-based artist collective Otabenga Jones & Associates. Operating under the direction of Otabenga Jones, the collective includes African-American artists Dawolu Jabari Anderson, Jamal Cyrus, Kenya B. Evans, and Robert A. Pruitt. In addition to  African masks and figures and contemporary art from the Menil Collection, the exhibition includes non-art objects from popular culture in an installation that eschews a hierarchy of “high” and “low” art. GEORGE DEEM at the Nassau County Museum of Art, Roslyn Harbor NY

Curator Franklin Perrell organized an exhibition of contemporary works of art that reference Valazquez’s Las Meninas. The exhibition, from September 5 to November 4,included both monumental bronze sculptures by Manolo Valdes in the museum’s outdoor sculpture park and, in a gallery installation, sculptures by Manolo Valdes, and paintings by John Clem Clarke and George Deem. To inaugurate the new Therese A. Maloney Gallery at the College of Saint Elizabeth, Dr. Virginia Fabbri Butera presents the exhibition “The Annunciation in Contemporary Art”.
